The Stunning new album from Tangerine Dream

Tangerine Dream celebrates their 40th Anniversary in 2007 with the release of their latest album - "Madcapís Flaming Duty". Released 2nd April 2007, the album is dedicated to former Pink Floyd guitarist Syd Barrett who died in July 2006.

The lyrics for each of the songs on the new album are adapted from English and American poets from 17th and 18th century literature by Bianca F. Acquaye. The music is written by Edgar Froese and Thorsten Quaeschning.

This recording is dedicated to the influential spirit of a legendary musical mind, Syd Barrett, who had to...

By now Schmoelling had been replaced by Haslinger, but TD in concert was still an alluring proposition. The heavily sequenced music had morphed more into percussive territory, and improvisation was a distant memory, but the melodies often soared and their compositional skills were still up there with the best. Whatís even better about this concert is that it is presented in fantastic soundboard quality.

Enthusiastic applause heralds the opener 'Pilots of Purple Twilight' from 'Exit'. Initially the keyboard ephemera which open the track are very different to the album, but then the track...

This is very much a sibling to the Cleveland '86 concert. Again it's a soundboard, and there's enough variation to be well worth picking up. The opening piece titled 'Intro UK 86' is classic TD of the period and I can't recall ever hearing this section before, a flute dominated atmospheric outing which initially contains all manner of effects. Tension is then built with elongated pads and percussive snippets which hint at the 'Stratosfear 86' track that follows. The concert set list continues as per Cleveland, but then we have another difference with...

Hot on the heels of their sensational 1981 concerts, the boys headed "down under" and performed a clutch of concerts which have rightly entered the annuls of EM folklore. With 'White Eagle' hot off the press, and 'Exit' not too distant a memory, they certainly had a gamut of magical EM to weave into the performance.

Even better, the recording quality of this concert is totally amazing. It is a pristine recording of the FM broadcast that was aired all those years ago, and Iíd rate it as a full 10.

We start with...

This is Tangerine Dreamís best 80ís concert. Yes, I know there are some mighty contenders - Logos; Poland; Pergamon; Livemiles. But on the European tour in early 1981, the boys really nailed it and delivered wave after wave of sensational sequenced, rhythmic, melodic EM. The majority of which has never seen an equivalent studio release.

Letís be clear what this release is. Itís an audience recording. But, and itís a big but, itís probably the best audience recording Iíve ever heard given the period and the portable recording technology that was available at the...

Tangerine Dream played an astounding 38 dates in the UK alone between 1980 and 1982. It was a fantastically prolific period and the visual spectacle and power-house electronics that TD served up in those years were something that will live with this reviewer forever.

This album is a record of their performance in Preston on the 5th November 1980. Itís an audience recording, and not a bad one - Iíd rate it as 8, however itís noticeably inferior to the Paris í81 recording .

There are a number of reasons why I never tire of hearing concerts from the boysí North American tour in 1977. They hit a perfect balance between improvisation and structure, and they were using an incredible array of analog modular technology to deliver an amazingly powerful sound.

The tour of course was enshrined onto the 'Encore' album, but a few other worthy recordings exist, and this is one of them. The Montreal Plas des Arts performance was broadcast on CHOM-FM and here youíll find a very nice recording of it. Not up to...

This concert has been enshrined into TD folklore because of the 'Emerald Beyond' vinyl bootleg that was released in very limited quantities. The album was an incomplete window on the concert, focussing largely on the "heavy metal guitar" section where Edgar spanked his plank to a pulp. Here you get a far more complete version of the concert which shows it was another classic, full of amazing powerhouse sequencing and subtle atmospherics, often featuring luscious mellotron.

Itís another audience recording for sure, Iíd rate the sound quality as a 7, more than decent enough to get a good feeling for...
